Manga & Anime
Art Exhibition

The aim of this exhibition is to support and promote talented Manga and Anime Artists, and present their work to the public, in context, along with traditional Japanese culture.

The story so far . . .
After the successful launch in Richmond on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th August 2008, and the cultural presentation evening on 1st September 2008, the exhibition continues, adding further artwork by the original artists, as well as by other artists.

Coming next . . .
From 1st October to 2nd November 2008, the artwork will be on display at Westminster Reference Library, just off Leicester Square in London. After that, it will be at St John's Wood Library from 3rd to 30th November 2008. Then, on 28th February and 1st March 2009, there will be two days of art, cultural activities and fun at the Richmond Adult Community College.

"As well as the static exhibition of hanging artwork, we also intend to build on the aspects of cross fertilisation of ideas between different art forms, traditional and modern. For example, we are creating an opportunity for the manga artists to try origami, calligraphy, kimono wearing, tea ceremony, basic martial arts kata, basic dance moves, and so on, so that it informs their art. At the same time, we have the traditional artists drawn by the manga artists. All of which takes place with the active participation of a freely admitted public audience."

CosPlay Events

The exhibition hosted two cosplay events on Saturday 16th August, organised in conjunction with The Grand Cosplay Ball.

There was a Photoshoot with Pat Lyttle from 2pm. This was a free event and included a make-up artist to make sure everyone got some great shots. There was also a charity raffle for Bliss (see below).

Ball tickets cost £7.50 including tea and a cake. They are available to buy from The Grand Cosplay Ball website. All profits will be donated to Bliss, the premature babies charity. There are only 30 places available so don't miss out!

If you have any questions about the The Grand Cosplay Ball please email emilyb@grandcosplayball.com

Exhibiting Your Artwork

How to submit your artwork . . . If you are an artist and wish to exhibit your work. The first step is to contact Martin Solloway via the following e-mail address: creative_thinker@mac.com

If your piece is of an irregular shape or size, we can work out the best way of including it. The prefered size is A3, but larger pieces can be accommodated. Once you have discussed the matter with Martin, please down-load and complete the following application form and return it with an attachment (JPEG format) of your artwork.

Download application form Download MS Word file 45.5 KB Download pdf file 73.1 KB

There is a small charge for each item submitted to the exhibition, as follows:

For the Richmond activity, each artist was limited to a maximum of five pieces; however, there is no longer any restriction. Indeed, by 11th and 12th July, we would like to have 150 hanging artworks in total, to help celebrate 150 years of friendship between Japan and the UK. The Exhibition is an official event of Japan-UK 150

Japan-UK 150

This Autumn is also the 100th anniversary of the The Anglo-Japanese Association in Tokyo, with which we have strong connections. There is a chance that some art works from these exhibitions in England will be exhibited in Japan.

Special Submission for pictures of Akemi
It is interesting how different artists depict the same person. Akemi has been drawn by several artists in different ways. She is celebrating her 50th birthday this year, so by special request, it has been arranged that pictures of Akemi may be submitted to the exhibition entirely free of charge.

In parallel to her activities as a lecturer of Japanese culture, Akemi has modelled for illustrators and photographers from the USA, UK and Japan. Therefore it was suggested that 50 works of Manga images of Akemi (either drawn from life or based on photographs) should be displayed at this exhibition. This will give an interesting "50:100:150 year perspective" inspired by Akemi's 50 years, the Anglo-Japanese Association's 100th year anniversary, and the 150 year celebration of relations between the UK and Japan.

All artists exhibiting their work must prepare the following . . .

Selling the artwork . . .
Unless the artist decides that a particular piece is not for sale, all the artwork in the exhibition is available to buy. Each item has a number on its frame and a corresponding listing in the catalogue. So, anyone who is interested in a particular piece may look up the details in the exhibition catalogue, which lists the title of the piece, the artists, the price and a 50 word desription.

If they decide that they would like to buy the artwork, they should give their contact details to the receptionist. However, as with most exhibitions, the art is not taken off the walls until the end of the exhibition. Pieces that have been bought are marked with a coloured dot on their frame. The buyer and artist will have direct communication after the show.
